Paving contractors and paving tips.
Paving is a word that brings a few images to mind such as, investment, aesthetics, cost, budget, home improvement and a host of other images. Some of the images are very beneficial and then there are others that are quite negative such as money and expensive.

It is worth your while to spend a little time investigating not only the brick type and colour that will improve the value of your house but also compliment the aesthetics of the house as well. There are so many variations available as well as various colours that are also available that it is impossible for anyone to carry enough samples.
I would like to recommend that anyone wanting to do correct and investment wise paving should do a little homework. I would suggest the following steps should be considered.
A) Check the credibility of the various paving companies in your area.
(Hellopeter.com is a very good checking tool)
B) Find 3-4 paving installers to quote on your paving.
C) Ask the salesman for suggestions and reasons for the suggestions made. (Often the salesman is so concerned about their commission that they will offer the cheapest brick possible and not be concerned about quality or durability of the brick.)
D) To check if the sales person knows his trade, ask a question regarding the plastic used under the paving to prevent weeds growing. This sounds like a legit question, however, plastic is never used under paving as any water that finds its way under the paving needs to be absorbed into the soil and not accumulate under your paving on top of the plastic. If the sales person gives you an answer positive to using plastic under the paving he/she does not know anything about paving and needs to be shown the way out of your property.

We are currently busy with a 350m2 driveway in Bryanston that needed to be uplifted and then repaired.
Many home owners don’t realise that their existing paving can be re-used and the driveway or pool area can once again look good at a fraction of the price of new paving.
There is a lot of work removing the old grouting from the paving but the end result both from an aesthetic and cost point of view is well worth it.

There are so many different types of extras that builders don’t tell you about until you are neck deep in debt and trying to finish off the project. One of the things that no one talks about is the rubble that is going to sit on your pavement outside of your house.
Rubble created during building operations.
When one looks at the cost of removing rubble and add that cost to the quote for the installation you might find that it would have paid to be a bit more diligent when you were out getting your quote. Ensure you find out if there are any extras that could occur before signing the order.
Rubble can cost a lot of money to remove.
Often a company does not know how much rubble will be created and will rather give you a cost per load to remove the rubble. They should be able to give you an indication of how many loads you could expect which would then give you an indication of what the total cost for the installation will be including the removal of the rubble.
Paving by Suburb
We have done paving in most suburbs in the greater Gauteng and we will include an article with most of our installations from now on.

In most of the paving mentioned above we paved using Corobrick products however, we do also pave with Flagstones and Bevel bonds in all of Gauteng. It is our policy to give a client advice regarding which paver would best suite the area that is to be paved but we will pave using any brick or paver preferred by the client.
Flagstones and clay combined in Jo’burg North
Most clients do not know what is the costs to do paving today and I like to suggest that home owners try estimate the size of the area to be paved and get a telephone quote before inviting a salesman around to measure accurately and giving a formal quote. I also suggest that a paving quote be done early in the construction of a new house as it would need to be budgeted and not left as the last thing to be considered.
Often a home owner will settle for cheap paving as their budget is exhausted but within a couple of years the paving needs to be re-done due to poor selection or poor installation.
The new range from Corobrick is building up a storm as more home owners are installing these clay pavers on their driveways. We recently installed a 300m2 driveway in Roodepoort with the Namaqua paving bricks. This new paver is much cheaper than the standard clay paver but it also has a look of its own. This means that you getting a long lasting clay brick at almost the same price as the cement bevel bond bricks.

The rustic look is something the home owners have been looking for in a long time but only could get it from cement or concrete pavers. All paving installation companies have jumped into selling and installing this new range from Corobrick paving bricks due to its rustic appearance and cost. The sister product called Ironstone also gives a rustic look and feel but is red as opposed to yellow and is also making ground across Gauteng.

Before selecting just any available brick for your driveway or pool area, spend a little time at a brick yard near you to see some of the paving bricks that are available and talk to your paving consultant about the various options available. Remember that the first thing a potential buyer sees when driving up to your house is the paving.

There has been a rush on the Corobrick Namaqua and Iron stone range. We recently installed 310m2 of Namaqua in Strubensvalley followed up with another 140m2 in Brackendowns. We have since then paved many other properties across Gauteng with this new Corobrick range.

Often the salesman is only price conscious and tries to quote on the cheapest brick currently available. Take a bit of time selecting the brick that will best increase the value of your property

One area that homeowners are aware of but often forget to tell the paving salesman about is the drainage problems that happen every time it rains. We had a situation that was evident and this time the client was not aware of the water problem. The ground felt very spongy when I walked on it and asked if they had recently done anything in the area which was to be paved. The owner of the house said that they put their sprinklers on 3 times a week but the ground was always quite spongy.
Drain in front of a garage.
On careful examination I saw that there was nowhere for the water to run off so it just saturated the ground. All the water ran to one corner and pooled there while slowly sinking into the ground and the ground was getting water logged. I told the owners of the house that the problem would multiply once the paving was laid as there would be no place for the rain water to drain and consequently it would simply pond and eventually begin to create a foul smell. Luckily the answer to this problem was simply to make a neat 10cm hole in the wall to allow the excess water to run out of this enclosed area.
Not every water problem has a simple answer but there is always a solution if looked at constructively. Sometimes a simple raised header course is all that is needed, other times it may be that a drain needs to be built and in most cases it simply needs the paving to be laid correctly to allow the rain water to run away from the house and walls.

Don’t ignore your water problem, discuss it with your paving company and let them propose a solution. You don’t have to accept their proposal but it could have a solution to the damp starting on your house walls. Try resolve the problem before it happens.
Plastic under the paving
I was called by one of our building contractors to analyze why a client of his had a problem with their paving. The client is a major law firm in Johannesburg and their paving was only 5 years old but was shifting badly and opening gaps in the paving. Some of the gaps were as wide as 4cm. I personally could not believe that the paving was only 5 years old and even though it was cement bevel bond and not clay, there was just no way that the paving should have deteriorated to this extent.
re lifting the driveway to remove the plastic sheeting
We lifted a section of the paving to get an idea of how the paving was stabilised and found that the paving had been laid on a waterproof plastic sheeting. I knew just then that it could not have been a master builders paving company that laid the paving and actually told him. The client told me that it was the builder that built the building that also did the paving but wanted to know how I knew. The answer was simple, how is paving going to stabilise if laid on a sheet of plastic and where is the rain water going to drain to?
Water laying on the plastic sheet
Most builders do not know the science of paving but will undertake the job for the extra cash and most clients are just too lazy and too complacent to call in someone else to do the paving. The problem is that 3-5 years down the line the paving needs to be uplifted and re-laid which just adds to the expense of the paving.
Plastic sheeting under your paving offers no stability to your paving.
If you are about to do paving, ask the company that you are considering to use, to please lay a plastic sheeting under your paving, if they agree, fire them and get a paving company that not only refuses to lay plastic under the paving but also explains why it is wrong.
Paving is a science and it should not be treated lightly or it will cost you a lot of money in the long run. Contact Richard on 084 300 4220 for more advice or a free quote on your paving.
The one area around a house that really takes a pounding is the driveway paving. This often-neglected area is the first item seen by potential buyers when looking to buy a house. Driveway paving is not often seen to be deteriorating until it starts to fall apart and then it is a deterrent to any potential buyer. Paving is subliminal and either attracts or repels people from a house.
Tuscan clay paving bricks from Corobrick
There are certain bricks that are designed to enhance the appearance of any house plus many are designed to take the punishment that it needs to take. Then there are some very attractive bricks that are just not suited to being laid on a driveway. I always suggest people that are about to embark on driveway paving to call a couple of companies in to quote but ask each one for their preference and then ask the next company their thoughts on that suggested brick. You will soon know who is just out to get your order and who has your interest at heart.

My personal preference for driveway paving is clay. Clay is a natural product that expands when hot and contracts when cold. It has a very pleasing appearance when finished and will always increase the value of any house. Installation of clay pavers will mean that the installation company will use rubber expansion strips to ensure that the paving can breath. It is almost like you have a living breathing driveway with the potential to last for decades.
Clay paving done with Corobrick
Clay paving has been the preferred choice around swimming pools and to this day you will find more than 65% of new pools being installed with clay paving around the perimeter. I would just like to stress at this point that the installation of any paving is not as simple as it may sound, there are installation procedures that need to be followed if the paving is to last. See one of our previous articles on this blog regarding paving installation. Good luck and God bless you, Richard 084 300 4220
