If you are working on a tight budget but would like to get paving laid at your house or business premises, take heart, there are various paving options available that could save you money and still have the desired aesthetic look.
There is always a paving brick on sale at various times of the year and you just need to simply ask the salesman for the current specials.
One of the most critical things that you should look out for is a paving installer or paving contractor that knows how to properly install paving. We are called on a regular basis to uplift and relay paving done by either the builder, swimming pool installer, electrician and even the plumber. Paving is a science and if installed correctly can last for many years. Paving is not the same as tiling so be wary of any tiler claiming to be able to do your paving.
Anyone can lay paving but invariably the paving collapses after a very short time, it looked perfect after it was installed but due to incorrect installation procedures it does not last and costs the home owner more money to re-install the paving. We have recently uplifted and re-laid paving in Eye of Africa, Aspen Hills and Meyersdal Eco Estate, in each of these cases the builder laid the paving after convincing the owner that they always do the paving themselves.

A tip that all home owners and business property owners should keep in mind is, “Let builders build your home or building, let electricians do the electricity, get plumbers to install the plumbing, Pool installers build your pool and paving contractors to install your paving.” Short cuts more often than not cost double when the job has to be re-done.

Over time the paving can start to look like it is sliding all over the place and big gaps start forming between the bricks.
If this is what your paving is starting to look like then don’t hesitate to get it repaired soon or you will need to replace all the paving. Nothing gets better with time, only worse so don’t leave it for too long. If you feel the paving just after the collapsed area you will find that all the bricks are all loose and easy to lift as the border has collapsed.
Often builders that try install paving make a few basic mistakes such as placing plastic sheeting under the paving or instead of an edgebeam they install the paving with a collar. There are a few other areas that they fall down on but you will invariably call in a paving company to repair the paving after a couple of years due to incorrect installation procedures.

Paving is a word that brings a few images to mind such as, investment, aesthetics, cost, budget, home improvement and a host of other images. Some of the images are very beneficial and then there are others that are quite negative such as money and expensive.

It is worth your while to spend a little time investigating not only the brick type and colour that will improve the value of your house but also compliment the aesthetics of the house as well. There are so many variations available as well as various colours that are also available that it is impossible for anyone to carry enough samples.
I would like to recommend that anyone wanting to do correct and investment wise paving should do a little homework. I would suggest the following steps should be considered.
A) Check the credibility of the various paving companies in your area.
(Hellopeter.com is a very good checking tool)
B) Find 3-4 paving installers to quote on your paving.
C) Ask the salesman for suggestions and reasons for the suggestions made. (Often the salesman is so concerned about their commission that they will offer the cheapest brick possible and not be concerned about quality or durability of the brick.)
D) To check if the sales person knows his trade, ask a question regarding the plastic used under the paving to prevent weeds growing. This sounds like a legit question, however, plastic is never used under paving as any water that finds its way under the paving needs to be absorbed into the soil and not accumulate under your paving on top of the plastic. If the sales person gives you an answer positive to using plastic under the paving he/she does not know anything about paving and needs to be shown the way out of your property.

There is a lot of work removing the old grouting from the paving but the end result both from an aesthetic and cost point of view is well worth it.

There are so many different types of extras that builders don’t tell you about until you are neck deep in debt and trying to finish off the project. One of the things that no one talks about is the rubble that is going to sit on your pavement outside of your house.

When one looks at the cost of removing rubble and add that cost to the quote for the installation you might find that it would have paid to be a bit more diligent when you were out getting your quote. Ensure you find out if there are any extras that could occur before signing the order.
Rubble can cost a lot of money to remove.
Often a company does not know how much rubble will be created and will rather give you a cost per load to remove the rubble. They should be able to give you an indication of how many loads you could expect which would then give you an indication of what the total cost for the installation will be including the removal of the rubble.
Fixing a bad paving situation. There are many home owners that don’t know that it is possible to repair a driveway or pool area by using the current old bricks. Normally the edge beam on existing paving is difficult to re-use but most of the rest of the bricks can be used again to assist in reducing the cost. The new bricks will age and get dirty in a relatively short time and blend in with the older bricks and hardly be noticeable.
We often save our clients R1000’s by re-using the existing bricks and bringing in plus minus 20% new bricks to make up for the bricks that are broken or can’t be used for one or another reason. We then scatter the old and new bricks in the paved area so that there are no obvious patches and the finished product is a bit mottled as opposed to patched.
We have found in a lot of cases that the company that did the original paving never did a strong edgebeam and that is why in most cases the paving collapses. This is one of the most critical areas of the paving but it can be hidden from unknowing clients. To conclude, if you don’t plan on selling your house in the near future and your current paving is functional, then consider an uplift and relay and save a small fortune.
The area will still need to be scarified, levelled and re-compacted as if you were doing a new paving installation, the only difference is that 80% of the paved area has been done in your old bricks. We recently did a repair to a house in Bryanston where we uplifted 350m2 of broken brick cobble and relaid the old paving bricks but mixed in 80m2 of new bricks. The final result is a functional and repaired driveway which saved the home owner R1000’s.

The Bosun urban paver when laid has a real granite and/or a marble finish that stands heads above most of its competitors. We have laid this paver in a couple of driveways recently with extremely positive reactions from not only the owners but also from their neighbours. This paving brick might not be ideal for a patio or around a swimming pool but it is a paver that will turn heads when laid on your driveway.
